The Power of the Motor City
Acrylic on Canvas
24 × 30 inches
I won the Rehmann Detroit Red Wings Art Contest in 2024. The theme for that year’s competition was “power play”. I really wanted to show several of the different aspects that could give a team an advantage over another. I tried to literally show what a power play is with one player on the other team unable to be on the ice, in the arms of an octopus rather than in the box, but still unable to play giving the Red Wings an advantage in numbers. I also think we have some pretty awesome hockey fans in Detroit and that fans can play a part in motivating and supporting our players, so to show this I included the stands and lights flashing out of them. I included some of the banners at Little Caesars Arena to highlight the Red Wings legacy and other details of our awesome new stadium as well. And finally, I think the city itself and support from the city can be an advantage for a team and I wanted to highlight this by including the Detroit skyline and the spirit of Detroit who is literally tipping the ice in our favor. My painting is now located in Little Caesars Arena in the Rehmann Club area.
