Fire Escape

Graphite Pencil on Paper

47 × 72 inches

Fire Escape is a piece about unhealthy relationships. Each room represents a different feeling that someone might have in an unhealthy relationship, some good and some bad, with the fire escape leading them in a cycle through each of these rooms. The fire escape begins at the top of the building in the room with the house on fire, representing when a person feels like they know they need to leave a relationship, but then it continues on through other rooms that start to muddle the urgency of leaving and the path to leave might be blocked at points with branches or other obstacles. On average it takes people seven attempts to leave an unhealthy relationship for various reasons and this piece aims to highlight how people can get back on and off the fire escape many times travelling through all of these rooms of emotion and hitting road blocks before finally exiting for good.
